Census 2000 figures ranked Sugar Land #1 in growth in the Houston metro area and #1 among the state's 45 largest cities. The City's population experienced a 158% increase, from 24,529 in 1990 to 63,328 in 2000. January 2009 population is expected to reach 79,732.
By race, the City's breakdown is 60.84 percent, White; 23.75 percent, Asian; 7.98 percent, Hispanic or Latino; and 5.12 percent, Black or African American.
The most recent FBI statistics indicate Sugar Land is the 5th safest city in America. Sugar Land citizens feel very safe at home, work or play as reflected in the 2006 Citizen Satisfaction Survey. Over the past two years, with an already low crime rate, the City experienced more than a 20% decrease in overall crime. The 146 sworn police officers will give much credit for their outstanding results to the help of the citizens and their community involvement.

Sugar Land Schools
The educational attainment of the citizens of Fort Bend County is the highest in the region and exceeds the national average. FBISD is the seventh largest school district in Texas and enjoys a reputation as an excellent school district. Sugar Land campuses are within the Fort Bend School District and have eight schools rated exemplary, the highest rating. Ratings are determined primarily by achievement levels on the TAKS tests.
The new University of Houston System at Sugar Land recently opened its doors. A campus and research park on 248 acres that includes numerous educational facilities, including a media and technology center.
